SWODA acts as the administrative agency on behalf of the Association under this agreement for the acquisition, implementation and operation of the 911 Association emergency telephone network. SWODA’s Executive Director, Debora Glasgow, serves in the same capacity for the 911 Association; however, the 911 Association’s Board of Directors determines policy and sets annual assessments. By Latia Murray - The Weatherford Fire Department, WFD, can trace its humble beginnings back to 1898, when volunteers were paid $2 per call and used two-hose carts and a hook ladder for fire emergencies. Now, the department has grown to 14 paid firefighters and 15 volunteers who serve 188 square miles around the city and provide mu-tual aid to a much larger area when needed. The department recently moved into its new station. With just under 22,000 square foot, seven drive thru bays and one service bay the station is now big enough to house the 13 fire/rescue units, a 100 foot aerial platform, a regional technical rescue unit and two other support units. The new station can also house six firefighters per shift and accommodate up to 50 in the new training room. “It’s easy to come to work everyday when you know that your employer and those whom you protect are 100 percent supportive and provide you the tools to conduct your job efficiently and most of all, safely,” said Captain Jay D. Moore. As part of the new department, the Southwest Oklahoma Regional 911 association (SWOR911) implemented the E-911 system. “The 911 system is a great benefit to our firefighters,” said Assistant Chief, Mike Karlin, “Having the informa-tion right in front of you with the maps is priceless. We have found many additional uses for the system from plotting controlled burns to road closures, so that when a call comes in the information is already mapped.” Continued on page 3 The new Weatherford Fire Department
