Data Relating to October 1, 2012 Issued October 11, 2012 Row Crop Production Forecast OKLAHOMA: Production prospects increased for corn, sorghum, all hay, alfalfa hay, all other hay, and soybeans during the past month according to the Oklahoma Field Office of USDA-NASS. The state’s first pecan forecast of the year was set at 25 million pounds. Production of corn for grain is forecast at 36.8 million bushels, up 1 percent from last month and 115 percent from 2011. An average yield of 115 bushels is expected from 320,000 harvested acres. Production of grain sorghum is forecast at 5.6 million bushels, 11 percent above last month and 233 percent above last year. An average yield of 28 bushels is expected from 200,000 harvested acres. Cotton production is forecast at 170,000 480-pound bales, unchanged from last month but 95 percent above 2011. An average yield of 466 pounds is expected from 175,000 harvested acres. Soybean production is forecast at 6.0 million bushels, up 29 percent from last month and up 74 percent above last year. An average yield of 20 bushels is expected from 300,000 harvested acres. Peanut production is forecast at 77.0 million pounds, unchanged from last month but 41 percent above 2011. An average yield of 3,500 pounds is expected from 22,000 harvested acres. Production of all hay is forecast at 4.01 million tons, up 10 percent from the initial forecast in September and 72 percent above 2011. Canola production is forecast at 182.0 million pounds, 114 percent above 2011. An average yield of 1,400 pounds is expected from 130,000 harvested acres. Sunflower production is forecast at 5.6 million pounds, 6 percent above last year. An average yield of 1,217 pounds is expected from 4,600 harvested acres. Pecan production is forecast at 25.0 million pounds (utilized, in-shell basis), more than four times last year’s production. Improved varieties account for 5.0 million pounds while the native and seedling varieties account for the remaining 20.0 million.UNITED STATES: Corn production is forecast at 10.7 billion bushels, down slightly from the September forecast and down 13 percent from 2011. Yields are expected to average 122.0 bushels per acre, down 25.2 bushels from last year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 87.7 million acres, up 4 percent from 2011. All cotton production is forecast at 17.3 million 480-pound bales, up 1 percent from last month and up 11 percent from last year. Yield is expected to average 795 pounds per harvested acre. Production of grain sorghum is forecast at 252 million bushels, up 2 percent from last month and up 18 percent from last year. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 5.02 million acres, up 28 percent from 2011. Yield is expected to average 50.2 bushels per acre, down 4.4 bushels from last year. Peanut production is forecast at 6.11 billion pounds, up 3 percent from the September forecast and up 67 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average a record high 3,832 pounds per acre from 1.59 million harvested acres. Soybean production is forecast at 2.86 billion bushels, up 9 percent from last month, but down 8 percent from last year. Yields are expected to average 37.8 bushels per acre from 75.7 million harvested acres. Production of other hay is forecast at 66.4 million tons, up 1 percent from 2011. Alfalfa production is forecast at 55.6 million tons, down 15 percent from last year. If realized, this will be the lowest production level since 1953. Pecan utilized production is forecast at 309 million pounds (utilized, in-shell basis), up 14 percent from last year. Improved varieties are expected to produce 253 million pounds. Native and seedling varieties are expected to produce 55.9 million pounds.
