The Communicator Spring 2013 OkCC Annual Civic/Community Engagement Workshop Civic and Community Engagement through Science Date: Friday, March 15, 2013 Time: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Place: Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, 655 Research Parkway, Oklahoma City, OK 73104. Colloquium Conference Room (first floor). Presenter: Dr. Robert Franco, Professor of Pacific Anthropology, Coordinator of the Service-Learning Emphasis, and Director of the Office for Institutional Effectiveness, Kapiolani Community College, University of Hawaii. Registration: Contact Ms. Lisa Walker at lwalker@osrhe.edu, or 405-225-9154 Targeted Participants: Community Service/Service Learning Leaders Science Faculty and other STEM Faculty Faculty and Administrators Interested in Community Engagement Oklahoma Campus Compact’s annual workshop for Civic / Community Engagement will take a fresh approach this year, hosting Dr. Robert Franco, who is both a community engagement professional and science faculty at Kapiolani Community College (KCC), the University of Hawaii, to focus on community engagement through STEM disciplines. In addition to serving as Coordinator of the Service-Learning Emphasis and Director of the Office for Institutional Effectiveness at KCC, Dr. Franco’s extensive experience includes service as a Senior Faculty Fellow for Community Colleges for Campus Compact, and as an advisory board member for the International Institute of Partnerships at Portland State University. He assisted in the development of the Carnegie Classification of Community Engagement, and served as an institutional consultant for a successful application for this classification. A leader in the civic application of science, Dr. Franco currently serves as Co-Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation grant to integrate and institutionalize STEM innovations, and is a Faculty Fellow for NSF’s Science and Civic Engagement initiative (see http://www.sencer.net/). He oversees the evaluations of four NSF grants at KCC. STEM and secondary science education faculty are included in the invitation to community service/service learning administrators for this year’s workshop.
