OK DRS Breaking Barriers - Volume 2, Edition 1 - January 8, 2013 http://www.okrehab.org/BreakingBarriers/2013/01-22/index.html[9/26/2013 10:45:10 AM] Policy Hearings→ Tell Us What YOU Think Changes are coming The start of a new year means it is time for the DRS officials to announce to its community proposed changes to policies to see if anyone or group has any objections. While the rules won’t read like a bestseller, they do contain critical details important to our daily operation. That means it would be wise for all of us to be familiar with what is being reworked. Critical to these changes will be a series of upcoming public hearings where Oklahomans will have a chance to give their input. The public hearings will be: From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Feb. 4 in the Department Of Rehabilitation Services, second floor conference room, 3535 N.W. 58th in Oklahoma City; From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 5, in the conference room at Total Source For Hearing Loss And Access, 8740 E. 11th in Tulsa; From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Feb 6, in Bldg. 600, Room 656, of the Great Plains Technical Center, 4500 S.W. Lee Blvd. in Lawton. Brett Jones, Communications Officer, Takes the Reigns of “Breaking Barriers” The best part of being the new guy in the office is the opportunity to expand your world, meeting new people and hearing about issues that one might never consider in their personal life. I have already met many in the DRS and DDD offices, and because some faces and names are still a blur, I am sure I will call many of you by the wrong name the next time we meet. A part of my new role at DRS is to produce the “Breaking Barriers” employee newsletter. I worked in newspapers for more than 23 years in roles from reporter to publisher, and I can tell you my favorite part was not examining revenue spreadsheets or doing payroll, it was telling people’s stories. PWDAD continued→ Tell Us What YOU Think People with Disabilities Awareness Day 2013 Can we count on you? Do not leave a seat empty in your car on April 3 as we try to set a record for attendance at the 2013 People with Disabilities Awareness Day. The event will be held from noon to 4:30 p.m. at the state Capitol, with the afternoon program scheduled so that it is convenient for people from across the state. Our goal is to see more than 800 people attend this year’s event. How will you invest in this year’s event? Will you attend? Will you volunteer? Will you exhibit? Will you bring clients? Your involvement is critical for the 2013 People with Disabilities Awareness Day to be successful. Filling your car with fellow supporters and clients allows the disability community to show lawmakers we are motivated and passionate about our issues. More supporters equal more impact on behalf of the disability community.
