Hello – Our hearts are broken over the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. I’m sure your school has been revisiting your security and crisis policies. Everyone from students to faculty to community members will be looking to Counselors for support. Please continue to lift each other up. Thinking of you…Tommi Tragedy and Disaster Response Resources – from SchoolCounselor.com I cannot begin to imagine the insurmountable grief the community of Sandy Hook Elementary School is experiencing after the horrible school shooting tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the parents, students, school staff, community and those affected by the shootings… Rachel’s Challenge is a program that can absolutely change schools! We recently visited Tulsa Tech’s campus at Sand Springs and were told by their counselors that Sand Springs Schools had offered this program to their students. They told us it completely CHANGED their school culture and the attitudes of the students. They were much kinder and much more willing to help stop bullying. They recommended the program very highly. Diana Plummer, counselor at Central Technology Center in Sapulpa, won the National ACTE Educator of the Year! The competition for this award is fierce. It is unusual for a Guidance member to win that prestigious award so we are super excited for Diana and OkACTE Guidance Division! Congratulations, Diana--it is an honor well deserved!! Failure teaches real-world lessons in STEM education – from ASCD SmartBrief Students and educators in science, technology, engineering and math too often shy away from situations or challenges in which they stand a good chance of failing, writes Elizabeth Gerber, the Breed junior chair of design in the McCormick School of Engineering and School of Communication at Northwestern University. Gerber calls for more risk-taking, so students learn how to handle failure and develop perseverance. "As STEM professors, let's get back into the game and learn to fall again.
