Dorman Opening statements and overview of interim study o Out of Oklahoma’s 77 counties, 77 are food deserts. o Of Oklahoma residents, 21.4 percent are lacking money for food. o Oklahoma is the fourth hungriest state in the nation. o 17.2 percent of the state’s population is considered food-insecure. This is the third year for the program. o Some inmates have said they will garden at home and it has built skills for them while saving money in the county jail. Douglas Shinkle Senior policy specialist, National Conference of State Legislatures Dourlas.shinkle@ncsl.org o Discussed what other states are doing to encourage community gardening. o New York has state grant funding for community gardens and legislators are considering legislation to strengthen the state’s community garden efforts. o Tennessee’s Community Gardening Act of 1977 allows residents to obtain permits to use vacant public land for gardens. o California has placed emphasis on school gardens and enacted legislation that addressed sale of garden produce. o Recent legislation in Oregon authorized the Oregon Department of Education to award grants to school districts to purchase Oregon food products. Bob Wilson Kiwanis Community Garden Mustang o Discussed the Kiwanis garden in Mustang. Members work together and make decisions as a group about what to grow. o The market opens in May and closes in September. This is the first year that it was open on Wednesdays to reduce spoilage.
