the Safety Signal January 2014 Two buddies redefine “best friends” Buddies since kindergarten from small-town Adair, Oklahoma, two men have been the best of friends for 35 years now. They married classmates; both named Kim who are also friends. They are avid golfers, recently they became co-workers, and now the two have shared the same kidney. Wait, what? They shared the same kidney? Yes, it’s true. But start from the beginning. Ryan Harris was hired as a driver license examiner for the Dept. of Public Safety in August 2011; something that made him very happy. “It’s such a fun job with great benefits,” said Harris. “I work with some good people; everyone is so amazing.” But only months later, just before Thanksgiving, Harris was diagnosed with kidney failure. Having experienced some unfamiliar symptoms, Harris had scheduled an appointment with his doctor. From the emergency room in Pryor, Oklahoma, Harris was then life-flighted to Tulsa. “I started dialysis the day after Thanksgiving,” said Harris. For 14 months, Harris endured the treatment in hopes of improving, and he was placed on the kidney transplant waiting list seeking a match. Meanwhile, he had been encouraging his best friend Jeremy Gilpin to apply for a driver license examiner job that had come open.
