Page 1 of 13 The Communicator Fall 2011 2011 Regional Campus CompactHeartland Conference The Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri Campus Compacts concluded their second annual conference in Overland Park, Kansas, September 22-23, 2011. More than 150 participants came together for a successful two days of networking, discussion, and exploration of experiences and effectiveness in service-learning, engaged scholarship, and community outcomes. Keynote Speaker Rick Battistoni, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science and Public and Community Service Studies at Providence College, challenged participants to deepen the practice and impact of community engagement work on their campuses. Twenty concurrent sessions offered by faculty, administrators, and students from 19 public and private institutions of higher education in five Midwestern states (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma) spanned topics from research and assessment to first-year and non-traditional students to various community engagement tools and approaches. Oklahoma was represented with presentations from faculty, administration, staff and students from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma State University, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Tulsa. The Heartland Conference culminated with the initiation of an annual award program by the three host state Campus Compacts to honor outstanding faculty, staff, and community partners. Oklahoma Campus Compact 2011 Award Honorees The Oklahoma Campus Compact new annual state award program recognizes outstanding leadership and contributions by faculty, staff, and community partners. The inaugural awards were presented at the 2011 Campus Compact Heartland Conference in September in Overland Park, Kansas, by Maureen Curley, President of Campus Compact. Community Engagement Professional of the Year Mr. John Phelan, Social Science Coordinator/Psychology Instructor at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, for his dedicated leadership in advancing community engagement at his institution and in his community. The Community Engagement Professional of the Year award recognizes one professional from a member campus who has worked toward the institutionalization of academic service-learning and/or service, created and strived toward a vision of service for his/her campus, promoted higher education as a public good, provided exceptional support to faculty and students, and has been instrumental in forming innovative campus-community partnerships. Outstanding Community and Campus Collaboration Dr. Gregory Wilson, University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) and Mr. Blair Schoeb, United Way of Central Oklahoma (UWCOK), for the UCO/UWCOK Community Partnership Matching Grant Program, which funds faculty/community projects that provide educational and learning opportunities/benefits for UCO students and members of the local community. The Outstanding Community and Campus Collaboration award recognizes a sustained campus-community partnership that demonstrates a true partnership as evidenced by 1) community agency involvement in the development of the course goals and learning outcomes; 2) measurable impact (qualitative and quantitative) on students, faculty and institution; 3) measurable impact on the lives of those served by the community agency; 4) commitment of community agency to student learning. Excellence in Community-Based Teaching and Scholarship Dr. Charles M. Wood, Associate Professor of Marketing, University of Tulsa, for his innovative research and service projects contributing to many public and non-profit entities in the Tulsa community. The Excellence in Community-Based Teaching and Scholarship award recognizes one faculty member from a member campus who has 1) successfully incorporated service-learning into at least one course with demonstrable outcomes and 2) conducted outstanding research in the field of service-learning and engaged scholarship. Share your successes in campus and community engagement, hear new ideas, and network Page 3 of 13 with scholars and practitioners. 2012 President's Higher EducationCommunity Service Honor Roll The application for the 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll is now available at: http://myproject.nationalservice.gov/honorroll/. The application deadline is December 9, 2011 at 4 p.m. CST (5 p.m. EST). Launched in 2006, the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll annually highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement by recognizing institutions that achieve meaningful, measureable outcomes in the communities they serve. The President's Honor Roll increases the public's awareness of the contributions that colleges and their students make to local communities and the nation as a whole. The six students from Oklahoma join 137 students from 30 states in the program. Through the nomination for Newman Civic Fellows Awards, college and university presidents acknowledge students with the ability and motivation to create lasting change in our communities by inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, these Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. The Newman Civic Fellows Award is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of the founders of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating opportunities for student civic learning and engagement. The Fellows were honored at the September, 2011, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education board meeting, and will be working with Oklahoma Campus Compact to extend service leadership opportunities to other students. Kyle Buthod, Oklahoma State UniversityKyle Buthod, a junior at Oklahoma State University (OSU), has actively demonstrated a commitment to community civic engagement, while maintaining a high academic record and holding several leadership positions. Recently, Kyle has been an integral part of the Japanese Relief Effort, one of the largest student led philanthropic fundraisers in OSU's history. He is currently developing and implementing a long-range campaign to engage the OSU community in recognizing and addressing humanitarian needs to serve the global community. The Page 5 of 13 campaign will involve and inspire students through role-modeling, collaborative efforts, and strategic planning. Valerie Howard, Southeastern Oklahoma State University Valerie Howard, a junior at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, is a History major and Business minor. She focuses on politics and economics in academics as well as in her community involvement. Valerie understands that a democracy depends upon the involvement of its citizens. She is active in the political process, having served as a volunteer and intern for both local and state campaigns. She also served as a Congressional Intern. Beyond government involvement, Valerie is passionate about the importance of education to change lives, regularly volunteering as a tutor. Austin Hula, University of Central OklahomaAustin Hula, a sophomore at the University of Central Oklahoma, actively seeks to help persons with mental and physical disabilities in order to improve their livelihoods. For the past four years, Austin has been involved with "Make Promises Happen," a camp devoted to developing and encouraging individuals of all ages with special needs. Austin invites his fellow students to share his love for this population by bringing in his peers as new counselors to work with the campers, and is a valued leader among the college-age volunteers. Stefany Stewart, East Central University Stefany Stewart, a junior at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, is a community organizer and social entrepreneur seeking long term solutions to community problems. Stefany is active as a volunteer both at Pauls Valley General Hospital and with her hometown high school, among other community organizations. She understands the power of volunteers and has been working to recruit volunteers to build the capacity of organizations she believes in. Stefany is currently leading an effort to involve teen volunteers with the Pauls Valley General Hospital Auxiliary in order to expand the services offered to patients Page 6 of 13 and is active in inspiring recent and not so recent graduates to volunteer at her hometown high school. James "Logan" Walker, Rose State CollegeJames Logan Walker, a student at Rose State College, has moved beyond campus to engage a wide variety of people in an effort to find solutions to community challenges. He serves with Heart of God ministries in Oklahoma City as a Children's Training Director and a Physical Training Director. The ministry efforts are focused on working to assist underprivileged, elderly, and mentally challenged individuals. He has also helped establish a community-based ministry in a low-income suburb of Oklahoma City focused on food and support mechanisms for the at-risk residents of that community. Walker is also an active volunteer with the Senior Olympics and in providing support to the families of deployed military personnel at Tinker Air Force Base. Jasmine Wilson, Langston University Jasmine Wilson, a sophomore at Langston University, is a student leader who is active in providing assistance to low-income families. Through her involvement with the Scholars Club and other student organizations on campus, Jasmine has participated in numerous activities designed to assist low-income families in the Langston community. Her outstanding efforts have been recognized by her peers, faculty/staff, and community leaders. Oklahoma State UniversityJapanese Students Near the close of the 2011 Spring Semester the Oklahoma State University Office of International Students and Scholars, along with the Japanese Student Association, raised $30,000 for the American Red Cross Japan Relief Fund. Many organizations on campus volunteered their time to fundraising, with donations from many individuals to help the stricken victims of the March earthquake and tsunami. Page 7 of 13 Programs AmeriCorps*VISTA Program Update Oklahoma Campus Compact's AmeriCorps VISTA grant has been renewed by the Corporation for National & Community Service for 2011-2012. Nine VISTA members are currently serving to start or expand tutoring and mentoring projects, educate the public about financial literacy, and establish community networks to connect low-income residents with health resources. Three VISTA positions remain open, and additional campuses may apply to join by completing the host site application packet. A cost share commitment of $800-3,200 is required (amount depends on campus FTE and number of VISTAs requested). Open VISTA positions will be awarded in the order recruited. If your campus or department is not currently hosting a VISTA but is interested in addressing one of these issues, please contact Steve Godecke, VISTA State Program Coordinator at sgodecke@osrhe.edu, or (405) 225-9228. Students in Service Program Update Participation was expanded from 8 to 10 campuses in the second year of the Oklahoma Campus Compact Students in Service (SIS) program. SIS meets critical community needs by engaging higher education students in service as part-time AmeriCorps members, and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility. Upon successful completion of a 300-hour term of service in one year, student members are eligible to receive an Education Award of $1,175 to be applied toward outstanding federal student loans or the cost of attendance at a college or university. Oklahoma institutions of higher education participating in the 2011-2012 SIS program are: East Central University, Northeastern State University, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, Oklahoma State University, Seminole State College, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma, University of Oklahoma-Tulsa, University of Central Oklahoma, and Western Oklahoma State College. For additional information on the program see: http://www.studentsinservice.org/aboutus.shtml Page 8 of 13 Corporation for National andCommunity Service LegislativeUpdate In the last week of September, both the House and Senate Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-H) have decided on proposed budgets for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) for 2012. Below is a breakdown of each proposal: U.S. Senate Committee on AppropriationsSubcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related AgenciesProposed CNCS Budget FY'12: $1.093 Billion What this would mean: This would be a $17 Million increase for CNCS from FY'11 ($14 Million for the National Service Trust and $3 Million for NCCC). The entire Senate Labor-H allocation is $308 Million below FY'11 and eliminates 15 programs while increasing funding to CNCS. U.S. House of RepresentativesCommittee on AppropriationsSubcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related AgenciesProposed CNCS Budget FY'12: $280 Million What this would mean: The bill includes $280 million for CNCS, which will support only the National Senior Volunteer Programs within CNCS, and provides funding for the orderly elimination of other programs. $207 Million would fund the senior programs while the remaining funds would be used for CNCS and the Inspector General to close out activities. Campus Vote Initiative 2011 Voter Registration Contest Winners Oklahoma Campus Compact once again sponsored the Voter Registration Contest for the week(s) surrounding Constitution Day. Since September 17 fell on the weekend, campuses had the choice of conducting the competition either the 5-day week Page 9 of 13 before or after this date. Thirteen OkCC member campuses participated in this off-election year, registering 1,405 students to vote. Please join us in congratulating the winners, as determined by registration of the greatest proportion of their enrollment. RED (institutions 0-3,000 FTE) Eastern Oklahoma State College 87 students, 5.7% WHITE (institutions 3,001-7,000 FTE) Rogers State University 112 students, 3.5% BLUE (institutions 7,001-30,000 FTE) University of Central Oklahoma 627 students, 4.9% The contest's high-water mark for voter registration remains 5,331 students registered in 2008, an election in which the subsequent youth vote (18-29 years of age) in the general election nationwide was one of the highest recorded, at 51.1%, since 1972 when 18-20 year olds were allowed to vote in national elections. An advisory committee will be meeting to make preparations for campuses to participate in the fall of 2012, not only to support voter registration, but to include activities for voter education and support for voting. Faculty, administrative and student representatives of the 2011 winning campuses will be recognized and awarded in an upcoming meeting of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. All campuses, please make plans to participate next September 17th-21st and beyond, in the 2012 Oklahoma Campus Compact Campus Vote Initiative, a comprehensive approach to include the voter registration contest, voter education, and voting mobilization for the general election. Professional DevelopmentOpportunities 2011 IARSLCE Annual Conference Illinois Campus Compact, DePaul University, National-Louis University, Loyola University Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, Northern Illinois University and the International Association for Research on Service-learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) will host the International Association Page 10 of 13 for Research on Service-learning and Community Engagement Annual Conference. The featured theme for the 11th annual conference is "Research for Impact: Scholarship Advancing Social Change. The conference will be held November 2-4, 2011 at the historic Palmer House Hilton in the heart of downtown Chicago ("the loop"). Registration is now open. More info can be found at: https://erasingboundaries.psu.edu/page/2011-iarslce-annualconference Michigan Campus Compact's Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Institute Michigan Campus Compact will be hosting its biannual Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Institute in East Lansing, MI on January 30-31. This year's conference theme is "Engaged Campuses. Strong Communities." The conference will be designed to encourage participants to examine the impact that service, service-learning and civic engagement have on our communities. The conference theme is "Transforming Lives Through Colloaboration, Community and Citizenship." Keynote speakers will include Patti Clayton, Trish Kalivoda, Jeffrey Howard and Cassie Simmon. Grant Opportunity for UrbanInstitutions United States Soccer Foundation seeks Service Learning Partnerships The United States Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, received a 2011 Social Innovation Fund award from The Corporation for National and Community Service for its Soccer for Success program to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce obesity rates among at-risk youth in urban communities. The award will support the Page 11 of 13 expansion and replication of Soccer for Success, a free, after-school, sports-based youth development program designed to reduce childhood obesity through physical activity and nutrition education. The Social Innovation Fund award will allow the program to expand to 12,000 children within 12 cities across the country by fall 2012. The United States Soccer Foundation is seeking partnerships with urban University Service Learning programs to provide Service Learning students to the Soccer for Success program in order to make the program sustainable for the long term. They require 135 Service Learning students for every city serving 1,000 Soccer for Success participants; to serve one day a week for 90 minutes a day, for 12 weeks (one semester). Some highlights from the Oklahoma Profile: 795,235 Oklahoma residents volunteered 92.8 million hours of service through or for a nonprofit or community organization in 2010. Over the past three years (2008-2010) Oklahoma averaged an annual volunteer rate of 29.2%, with 815,000 volunteers serving 103.9 million total hours per year. The six students from Oklahoma join 137 students from 30 states in the program. Through the nomination for Newman Civic Fellows Awards, college and university presidents acknowledge students with the ability and motivation to create lasting change in our communities by inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, these Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change. The Newman Civic Fellows Award is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of the founders of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating opportunities for student civic learning and engagement. The Fellows were honored at the September, 2011, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education board meeting, and will be working with Oklahoma Campus Compact to extend service leadership opportunities to other students. Kyle Buthod, Oklahoma State UniversityKyle Buthod, a junior at Oklahoma State University (OSU), has actively demonstrated a commitment to community civic engagement, while maintaining a high academic record and holding several leadership positions. Recently, Kyle has been an integral part of the Japanese Relief Effort, one of the largest student led philanthropic fundraisers in OSU's history. He is currently developing and implementing a long-range campaign to engage the OSU community in recognizing and addressing humanitarian needs to serve the global community. The Page 5 of 13 campaign will involve and inspire students through role-modeling, collaborative efforts, and strategic planning. Valerie Howard, Southeastern Oklahoma State University Valerie Howard, a junior at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, is a History major and Business minor. She focuses on politics and economics in academics as well as in her community involvement. Valerie understands that a democracy depends upon the involvement of its citizens. She is active in the political process, having served as a volunteer and intern for both local and state campaigns. She also served as a Congressional Intern. Beyond government involvement, Valerie is passionate about the importance of education to change lives, regularly volunteering as a tutor. Austin Hula, University of Central OklahomaAustin Hula, a sophomore at the University of Central Oklahoma, actively seeks to help persons with mental and physical disabilities in order to improve their livelihoods. For the past four years, Austin has been involved with "Make Promises Happen," a camp devoted to developing and encouraging individuals of all ages with special needs. Austin invites his fellow students to share his love for this population by bringing in his peers as new counselors to work with the campers, and is a valued leader among the college-age volunteers. Stefany Stewart, East Central University Stefany Stewart, a junior at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, is a community organizer and social entrepreneur seeking long term solutions to community problems. Stefany is active as a volunteer both at Pauls Valley General Hospital and with her hometown high school, among other community organizations. She understands the power of volunteers and has been working to recruit volunteers to build the capacity of organizations she believes in. Stefany is currently leading an effort to involve teen volunteers with the Pauls Valley General Hospital Auxiliary in order to expand the services offered to patients Page 6 of 13 and is active in inspiring recent and not so recent graduates to volunteer at her hometown high school. James "Logan" Walker, Rose State CollegeJames Logan Walker, a student at Rose State College, has moved beyond campus to engage a wide variety of people in an effort to find solutions to community challenges. He serves with Heart of God ministries in Oklahoma City as a Children's Training Director and a Physical Training Director. The ministry efforts are focused on working to assist underprivileged, elderly, and mentally challenged individuals. He has also helped establish a community-based ministry in a low-income suburb of Oklahoma City focused on food and support mechanisms for the at-risk residents of that community. Walker is also an active volunteer with the Senior Olympics and in providing support to the families of deployed military personnel at Tinker Air Force Base. Jasmine Wilson, Langston University Jasmine Wilson, a sophomore at Langston University, is a student leader who is active in providing assistance to low-income families. Through her involvement with the Scholars Club and other student organizations on campus, Jasmine has participated in numerous activities designed to assist low-income families in the Langston community. Her outstanding efforts have been recognized by her peers, faculty/staff, and community leaders. Oklahoma State UniversityJapanese Students Near the close of the 2011 Spring Semester the Oklahoma State University Office of International Students and Scholars, along with the Japanese Student Association, raised $30,000 for the American Red Cross Japan Relief Fund. Many organizations on campus volunteered their time to fundraising, with donations from many individuals to help the stricken victims of the March earthquake and tsunami. Page 7 of 13 Programs AmeriCorps*VISTA Program Update Oklahoma Campus Compact's AmeriCorps VISTA grant has been renewed by the Corporation for National & Community Service for 2011-2012. Nine VISTA members are currently serving to start or expand tutoring and mentoring projects, educate the public about financial literacy, and establish community networks to connect low-income residents with health resources. Three VISTA positions remain open, and additional campuses may apply to join by completing the host site application packet. A cost share commitment of $800-3,200 is required (amount depends on campus FTE and number of VISTAs requested). Open VISTA positions will be awarded in the order recruited. Students in Service Program Update Participation was expanded from 8 to 10 campuses in the second year of the Oklahoma Campus Compact Students in Service (SIS) program. SIS meets critical community needs by engaging higher education students in service as part-time AmeriCorps members, and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility. Upon successful completion of a 300-hour term of service in one year, student members are eligible to receive an Education Award of $1,175 to be applied toward outstanding federal student loans or the cost of attendance at a college or university. Below is a breakdown of each proposal: U.S. Senate Committee on AppropriationsSubcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related AgenciesProposed CNCS Budget FY'12: $1.093 Billion What this would mean: This would be a $17 Million increase for CNCS from FY'11 ($14 Million for the National Service Trust and $3 Million for NCCC). The entire Senate Labor-H allocation is $308 Million below FY'11 and eliminates 15 programs while increasing funding to CNCS. U.S. House of RepresentativesCommittee on AppropriationsSubcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related AgenciesProposed CNCS Budget FY'12: $280 Million What this would mean: The bill includes $280 million for CNCS, which will support only the National Senior Volunteer Programs within CNCS, and provides funding for the orderly elimination of other programs. $207 Million would fund the senior programs while the remaining funds would be used for CNCS and the Inspector General to close out activities. Campus Vote Initiative 2011 Voter Registration Contest Winners Oklahoma Campus Compact once again sponsored the Voter Registration Contest for the week(s) surrounding Constitution Day. Since September 17 fell on the weekend, campuses had the choice of conducting the competition either the 5-day week Page 9 of 13 before or after this date. Thirteen OkCC member campuses participated in this off-election year, registering 1,405 students to vote. Please join us in congratulating the winners, as determined by registration of the greatest proportion of their enrollment. RED (institutions 0-3,000 FTE) Eastern Oklahoma State College 87 students, 5.7% WHITE (institutions 3,001-7,000 FTE) Rogers State University 112 students, 3.5% BLUE (institutions 7,001-30,000 FTE) University of Central Oklahoma 627 students, 4.9% The contest's high-water mark for voter registration remains 5,331 students registered in 2008, an election in which the subsequent youth vote (18-29 years of age) in the general election nationwide was one of the highest recorded, at 51.1%, since 1972 when 18-20 year olds were allowed to vote in national elections. An advisory committee will be meeting to make preparations for campuses to participate in the fall of 2012, not only to support voter registration, but to include activities for voter education and support for voting. Grant Opportunity for UrbanInstitutions United States Soccer Foundation seeks Service Learning Partnerships The United States Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, received a 2011 Social Innovation Fund award from The Corporation for National and Community Service for its Soccer for Success program to promote healthy lifestyles and reduce obesity rates among at-risk youth in urban communities. The award will support the Page 11 of 13 expansion and replication of Soccer for Success, a free, after-school, sports-based youth development program designed to reduce childhood obesity through physical activity and nutrition education. The Social Innovation Fund award will allow the program to expand to 12,000 children within 12 cities across the country by fall 2012. The United States Soccer Foundation is seeking partnerships with urban University Service Learning programs to provide Service Learning students to the Soccer for Success program in order to make the program sustainable for the long term.
